How to design input EMI filters for variable frequency drives, servo amplifiers, and motor control systems to meet EMC standards
Introduction
Variable frequency drives (VFDs) and servo amplifiers are some of the noisiest pieces of industrial equipment. Fast-switching IGBTs generate high dV/dt edges, common mode currents through motor parasitic capacitance, and conducted EMI across a wide frequency range.
Shaanxi SiRui Technology Co., Ltd. supplies magnetic cores and custom filter chokes for motor drive manufacturers.
1. Typical Filter Topology
- Common Mode Choke (CMC): The heart of the input filter. High impedance for CM noise.
- X Capacitors (Cx): Between lines, suppress DM noise.
- Y Capacitors (Cy): Lines to PE, suppress CM noise. Limited by leakage current.
- DM Inductor: Additional DM attenuation.
2. CMC Core Material Selection
- Nanocrystalline CMCs (Premium): Extremely high permeability, wide frequency range (10kHz–30MHz+), compact size. Increasingly adopted in modern drives.
- Ferrite CMCs (Cost-Effective): Lower cost, larger size. Common in lower-power drives.
Common mistake: Underestimating CM current. Motor drives can have hundreds of mA of CM current. If your CMC saturates from CM current, it stops working!
3. Design Workflow
- Define requirements: EMC category (C1/C2/C3), margin target, leakage current limit
- Pre-compliance test with LISN, separate DM/CM noise
- Size the CMC (core material, inductance, current rating)
- Select X/Y capacitors (safety-certified)
- Layout and prototype, test and iterate
4. Output Filters
- dV/dt Filter: Reduces dV/dt at motor terminals, protects motor insulation. For long cables (>15m).
- Sine Wave Filter: LC low-pass, smooths PWM to near-sine wave. Eliminates motor noise and vibration.
5. Custom Components from SiRui-Tech
At Shaanxi SiRui Technology Co., Ltd., we supply nanocrystalline toroidal cores for three-phase CMC input filters, ferrite CMC cores, powder cores for DM inductors, and finished three-phase CMC chokes for motor drive applications.
Conclusion
As SiC and GaN devices push switching frequencies higher, EMI challenges are getting worse. Nanocrystalline CMCs are increasingly replacing ferrite for modern high-performance drives.
