Nanocrystalline magnetic cores have become the material of choice for high-efficiency transformers, common mode chokes and current sensors where ferrite is too lossy and silicon steel is too large. With permeability up to 100,000, core loss 5–10x lower than ferrite, and saturation flux density of 1.2 T, nanocrystalline cores deliver the best balance of size, efficiency and performance.
This guide covers nanocrystalline core properties, comparison with other core materials, key applications, and how to select the right grade.

1. What is Nanocrystalline?
Nanocrystalline material is produced by rapid quenching of an iron-silicon-boron alloy with niobium and copper additions. Heat treatment grows nanoscale grains (10–20 nm) in an amorphous matrix, giving unique properties: permeability 10,000–100,000, low core loss, Bsat ~1.2 T, good temperature stability and low magnetostriction (quiet operation). Ribbon thickness is typically 20–25 μm.
2. Material Comparison
| Property | Nanocrystalline | Mn-Zn Ferrite | Amorphous | Silicon Steel |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Permeability | 10k–100k | 2k–10k | 30k–100k | 1k–5k |
| Bsat (T) | 1.2 | 0.4 | 1.5–1.6 | 1.8–2.0 |
| Core loss | Low | High | Medium | Very high |
| Best frequency | 10k–1MHz | 100k–10MHz | 50Hz–20kHz | 50/60Hz |
| Cost | Premium | Low | Medium | Lowest |
3. Key Applications
- Common mode chokes: standard in EV chargers, solar inverters, motor drives—smaller than ferrite, higher current capability
- High-frequency transformers: SMPS, welding inverters, resonant converters at 20–100 kHz
- Current transformers: accurate 50/60 Hz measurement in tiny cores, energy metering
- PFC inductors: low loss at high frequency
- Instrument transformers: class 0.1 precision metering
4. Core Shapes
| Shape | Best For |
|---|---|
| Toroidal | CMCs, CTs, power inductors (most common) |
| Cut-core (C-core) | Large high-current transformers |
| Rectangular strip | Distribution transformers |
5. Selection Guidelines
- Need permeability >50,000? Choose nanocrystalline for CMCs and precision CTs
- Operating above 500 kHz? Ferrite may be better
- Operating below 1 kHz? Silicon steel or amorphous is more cost-effective
- High DC bias? Nanocrystalline wins (Bsat 1.2 T vs ferrite 0.4 T)
- Size-critical? Nanocrystalline is 30–50% smaller than ferrite
6. Sirui-Tech Nanocrystalline Core Line
- Toroidal cores: 5–120 mm OD, permeability grades 10k, 40k, 80k
- Cut cores (C-cores): for high-power transformers and inductors
- Pre-wound assemblies: fully assembled CMCs and CTs
- Custom coatings: epoxy, parylene, insulation options
- Compliance: RoHS / REACH, SGS and CTI tested
Conclusion
Nanocrystalline cores bridge the gap between ferrite (high frequency, low Bsat) and silicon steel (low frequency, high Bsat). They are the right choice for common mode chokes, high-frequency transformers and precision current sensors in EV, solar and industrial applications.
