As SiC and GaN power devices move to higher switching frequencies and higher voltages, the gate drive transformer has become a critical component in isolated gate driver circuits. Unlike signal transformers, gate drive transformers must deliver precise timing, fast edges, and clean isolation between primary control and secondary power switch.

This guide covers gate drive transformer operation, key design parameters, magnetic material selection, and common topologies for IGBT, SiC MOSFET and GaN applications.

1. Function of a Gate Drive Transformer

The gate drive transformer (GDT) transmits switching signals from the control IC (low-voltage side) to the gate of the power switch (high-voltage side), while providing galvanic isolation.

2. Core Materials

Mn-Zn ferrite is the standard choice. High permeability, low loss at 100 kHz–5 MHz. Common shapes: EE, EI, toroid, pot core.

Ni-Zn ferrite for higher frequency (>5 MHz) where Mn-Zn loss is too high. Nanocrystalline for high-isolation, high-reliability traction and aerospace applications.

3. Key Parameters

4. Common Topologies

Topology GDT Config Application
Single switch 1:1 Buck, boost, flyback
Half-bridge 1:2 secondaries Motor drives, inverters
Full-bridge 2:2 Industrial inverters
Multichannel 1:4+ IGBT modules, traction

5. Sirui-Tech GDT Capabilities

Conclusion

Gate drive transformers are the isolation link between control and power circuits. Mn-Zn ferrite is standard. For modern wide-bandgap SiC/GaN designs, the GDT must not limit switching speed.
