Every inverter air conditioner, refrigerator, washing machine and heat-pump compressor sold today contains at least one magnetic component that did not exist in the same product a decade ago: the PFC inductor and the compressor-drive choke. Appliance platforms ship in millions of units, so a half-cent of material cost and a 2 K hot-spot margin are both worth arguing about.

1. The appliance power chain

Block Magnetic Typical spec
Input EMI filter Common mode choke 5–30 mH, 3–15 A, small EE or toroidal core
Active PFC (larger units) Boost inductor 200–600 µH, 3–10 A, powder core
Compressor inverter DC-link choke / output reactor 1–5 mH, 5–20 A, iron powder or gapped ferrite
Control and auxiliary supplies Flyback transformer 5–30 W, EE16–EE25, reinforced insulation
Fan motor drive Small output choke 0.5–2 mH, 1–3 A

2. Cost is the design constraint, not efficiency

An appliance inverter is optimised for material cost at a fixed efficiency threshold, not for the last 0.5%. That changes the magnetic design rules:

3. The hot spot is inside a sealed cabinet

Appliance electronics often sit in a compartment with no fan, next to a compressor that radiates heat. A 45–60 °C internal ambient is normal, and the magnetic component is usually the tallest part blocking its own convection. Design and verify at the compartment temperature with the cabinet closed. A Class B winding measured at 25 °C in open air tells you nothing useful.

4. Noise: the customer hears it

Magnetostriction in the choke at the PFC switching frequency and its harmonics can produce a tone audible in a quiet kitchen. It is usually fixed by vacuum impregnation, a lower flux swing, or moving the switching frequency out of the audible band — in that order of cost. A 20 kHz PFC with a loose winding will whine; potting it solves the problem more cheaply than redesigning the core.

5. Reliability expectations and derating

Appliance life targets are 10–15 years with a low field-return rate. The magnetics are usually derated for a 30 K margin to the insulation class limit and a 20% saturation margin at the maximum compressor current, including the start transient. Humidity resistance matters in tropical markets: varnish plus a conformal coat, or full potting for parts exposed to condensation.

6. Qualification standards that apply

IEC 60335-1 for household appliances, IEC 61000-3-2 for harmonic current limits (which is why PFC appears on larger units), and CISPR 14-1 for EMI. Insulation requirements for the SELV barrier and the reinforced barrier to mains dictate the creepage that shapes the flyback transformer.

Shaanxi SiRui Technology supplies Magnetic Core series cores and wound assemblies for appliance platforms — high-volume common mode chokes, PFC inductors, DC-link chokes and auxiliary flyback transformers — with automated winding and lot-level inductance data at the specified bias.
