What Is a Common Mode Choke?
A common mode choke (CMC) is a magnetic component with two or more windings wound in opposite directions on the same core. It blocks common mode noise while allowing normal differential mode signals to pass freely. It is the most effective single-component solution for EMI suppression in power supplies, inverters, and communication lines.
How a Common Mode Choke Works
In a common mode choke, the two windings are connected so that differential mode currents produce canceling magnetic fluxes in the core. Common mode currents, however, produce additive fluxes and see high impedance. This means the choke presents low impedance to the desired differential signal and high impedance to unwanted common mode noise, attenuating conducted EMI without disturbing the signal path.
Key Specifications Table
| Parameter | Typical Value | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Impedance @ 100 MHz | 50 – 1000 Ω | Frequency dependent |
| Rated current | 0.1 – 100 A | Line current capacity |
| Inductance per winding | 0.1 – 100 mH | Core and turns dependent |
| Core materials | Ferrite / nanocrystalline | Frequency range dependent |
| DCR | 1 – 100 mΩ | Power loss factor |
| Isolation voltage | 0.5 – 4 kV | Safety requirement |
Ferrite vs Nanocrystalline CMC
Ferrite CMC offers stable impedance up to several hundred MHz and is cost-effective for most applications. Nanocrystalline CMC provides much higher impedance at lower frequencies (10 kHz – 1 MHz), making it the preferred choice for EV chargers, solar inverters, and VFD drives where low frequency common mode noise is dominant.
Selection Steps
Step 1: Measure or estimate the common mode noise spectrum. Step 2: Select core material based on the dominant noise frequency. Step 3: Choose rated current and impedance target. Step 4: Verify saturation under unbalanced current. Step 5: Validate EMI performance with a pre-compliance test.
Applications
Common mode chokes are used in switch mode power supplies, EV on-board chargers, solar inverters, VFD drives, LED drivers, data center PSUs, and HDMI / USB / CAN communication lines.

FAQ
Q: How do I know if I need a common mode choke? A: If your product fails conducted EMI tests, a CMC is usually the first component to add. Q: What is the difference between DM and CM filtering? A: Differential mode noise is filtered by X capacitors and DM inductors, while common mode noise is suppressed by CMC and Y capacitors.
