Choosing between ferrite and nanocrystalline cores is critical for transformer and inductor performance. Both materials serve different purposes in power electronics.
Ferrite Cores
Ferrite (MnZn or NiZn) is cost-effective and works well at high frequencies (100 kHz to MHz range). It is ideal for SMPS transformers, EMI filter chokes, and small signal applications. Ferrite cores have lower saturation flux density and higher core loss at power frequencies.
Nanocrystalline Cores
Nanocrystalline cores offer high saturation flux density (1.2 T), low core loss, and excellent permeability. They excel at line-frequency (50/60 Hz) common-mode chokes, DC-link inductors, and high-efficiency transformers. The trade-off is higher cost and more brittle mechanical handling.
Comparison Table
- Ferrite: Low cost, high frequency, lower Bsat (0.4-0.5 T)
- Nanocrystalline: Higher Bsat (1.2 T), low loss, premium price
When to Choose Nanocrystalline
Select nanocrystalline when efficiency targets exceed 98%, size is constrained, or the application demands low common-mode EMI at power frequencies.
