When you need to step up or step down voltage, you have two main choices: an isolation transformer or an auto transformer. They look similar and both change voltage, but they have fundamentally different electrical characteristics, safety profiles and cost.

This guide compares isolation and auto transformers, and helps you choose the right one for your application.

Shaanxi SiRui Technology Co., Ltd. manufactures both isolation transformers and auto transformers. Contact: sales@sirui-tech.com | Web: www.sirui-tech.com

1. Isolation Transformer

Physically separate primary and secondary windings. No direct electrical connection. Provides galvanic isolation, safety protection, noise attenuation and ground loop breaking. Any voltage ratio. Best for medical, industrial control, test equipment, IT systems.

2. Auto Transformer

Single winding with a tap. Primary and secondary share part of the winding. No galvanic isolation. Smaller, lighter, cheaper (30–50% less). Voltage ratio usually near 1:1. Best for voltage matching (480V to 400V, 240V to 208V), cost-sensitive power distribution.

3. Comparison

Parameter Isolation Auto Transformer
Galvanic isolation Yes No
Size/weight Larger ~30% lighter
Cost Higher 30–50% less
Ground loop breaking Yes No
Voltage ratio Any Usually near 1:1
Safety isolation Yes No

4. When to Use Isolation

5. When to Use Auto

6. Critical Safety Note

Auto transformers do not provide isolation. If a fault occurs, output can connect to full input voltage. Never use an auto transformer where isolation is a safety requirement.

Conclusion

Choose isolation when you need safety isolation, ground loop breaking, or codes require it. Choose auto transformer when you just need voltage matching at lower cost and smaller size. Never use auto transformer where isolation is a safety requirement.
