Ni-Zn Ferrite vs Mn-Zn Ferrite: Which Core to Choose?
Ferrite cores are classified into two main families: nickel-zinc (Ni-Zn) and manganese-zinc (Mn-Zn). Each has distinct magnetic properties that determine its ideal application. Understanding the difference is essential for selecting the right core for EMI filters, inductors, and transformers.
Magnetic Property Comparison
| Property | Ni-Zn Ferrite | Mn-Zn Ferrite |
|---|---|---|
| Initial permeability | 10 – 1500 | 1000 – 15000 |
| Frequency range | 1 MHz – 100 MHz | 10 kHz – 2 MHz |
| Resistivity | 10^5 – 10^9 Ω·cm | 1 – 10 Ω·cm |

| Typical use | EMI suppression, RF inductors | Power transformers, filters |
| Cost | Moderate | Lower |
Why Ni-Zn Is Used for EMI Suppression
Nickel-zinc ferrite has very high electrical resistivity, which minimizes eddy current losses at high frequencies. This makes Ni-Zn the standard choice for EMI filter beads, snap-on cores, and high frequency noise suppression above 1 MHz.
Why Mn-Zn Is Used for Power Applications
Manganese-zinc ferrite offers much higher permeability and saturation flux density, allowing smaller cores for the same inductance at power frequencies. It dominates power transformer and inductor designs from 10 kHz to 2 MHz.
How to Choose
Step 1: Identify the operating frequency. Step 2: For noise above 1 MHz choose Ni-Zn; below 1 MHz choose Mn-Zn. Step 3: Consider DC bias and saturation requirements. Step 4: Verify with impedance or inductance measurement in the actual circuit.
Applications
Ni-Zn cores: cable ferrites, EMI beads, RFID antennas, high frequency filters. Mn-Zn cores: switch mode transformers, power inductors, line filters, current transformers.

FAQ
Q: Which ferrite is better for a 100 kHz power inductor? A: Mn-Zn ferrite is the right choice at 100 kHz due to higher permeability and lower low-frequency loss. Q: Can Ni-Zn cores be used for power transformers? A: Not typically, as permeability and saturation flux are too low for power frequencies.
